Thru the past weekend we heard of guys getting steelhead hookups nearer the dam including a few good fish. The derby runs until Sept 6 and the awards ceremony held at Captain Jacks in Sodus Point (arrive by 3 PM). The steelhead were strong and vigorous and silver so hopefully indicating good health and smolting. Other area smaller tribs are dropping back toward low and clear and warming thru this week. We are catching fish in 50-110 water in front of the major rivers and off 9-mile point. If theres steelhead in the Oak then more then likely theres a few slinking up those smaller waterways too. As we hit 515 FOW the 85 rigger fires with a Warrior Lures Blue Jeans (on the 10 ft cheater). Temps for the weekend are forecast to rebound back into the 40s F. Water flows are def enough to encourage some fresh fish migrations at any time and the water color now is in a sweet spot for good presentations. The state is funding the effort as part of the Lake Ontario Resiliency and Economic Development Initiative. Forecast is for a warmup with temps around 50F (and wind) for the mid week and chance of rain on Thursday. There could be fresh steelhead, fresh silver browns or drop back fish. Lots of snow across WNY from an area wide snow. On the backside now of higher flows from about a week ago something like med to slightly high flows in the Oak and med in the smaller area waterways. Flows in the other area smaller waterways are high and dirty. Flows in the Oak are staying high with some stubborn overflow water that should be receding by about today leaving just the full cranking turbine flows. Another warmup is forecast thru the mid week with highs in the 40sF and another chance at rain Thursday. High flows can limit the movement of fish, and lower flows can restrict them. Lake Erie Steelhead: 2021 Fall Fishing Forecast As quickly as flows were restored in the Oak over the past weekend the fishing likewise perked up again with some steelhead hooked and a few knarly Kings clinging to a hopeful life. Look for a good water flow window possibly in the Genny while the Niagara remains a tough pill thanks to a windy open Lake Erie. The Greater Niagara Fish Odyssey is underway in Erie, Niagara and Orleans County August 20 until September 5, 2021. Intrepid anglers are capable of catching fish on the Oak in all of these flows, except for maybe blown AND dirty. But with cooler temps this week, the water temp has finally started dropping. Hearing of legit salmon bites and even a few browns too in fast water areas on the Oak. Despite the cold, a few diehards have been out there scoring on a some smaller browns and a few fine looking chrome steelhead. The presentation is not that technical, just look for favorable winds and water color. More tributary anglers are invited to help with feeding the fish and cleaning the pens. Biggest brown trout so far is a 16-pound, 12-ounce fish out of Point Breeze, weighed in by Gary Cregan of Rochester. And Erie Canal bolstered flows (year 2) will be contributing to the fishy equation sooner then later in multiple tribs! Port Bay still has perch fishing along the north end of the bay. Chance of fresh steelhead on the backside of the last higher flows or at least the past falls browns and steelhead should be redistributed. We have also been catching fish from 25-70 down. Some steelhead and cohos were caught with spoons. A little bit hard to stay on top of trib water flows as it seems like Canal drainage water is being passed thru with select adjustments on the water managers end that only they know about. No surprise, youd have to think we would pay for all that previous warm weather sometime. Fish as soon as reasonable conditions allow instead of waiting for supposed better conditions that may or may not materialize. Flows in the other area smaller waterways did bump up slightly from the most recent precipitation but seem to be sliding back to medium ish for now. Salmon are starting to stage in shallow water and becoming more active. Blown flows typically come from the overflow channel. Fish are still spawning in the typical areas on or near gravel. Last night at dusk I had no problem finding some Kings crashing and boiling around at the Bridges area on the Oak and even a few at Point Breeze. Its fall and its leaf fall time so expect maybe daily water level fluctuations on the Oak thanks to hydro power operation. So when even a reasonable high and stained water window presents itself, that may be the best time to fish. A few good browns reported to be hooked up yesterday on the Oak. They caught this 29# salmon earlier this week, their biggest catch of the year! Flows are actually up just a bit from earlier in the week when the visibility was less. So if youre following this the moral of the story is that the weather is up and down and therefore so are the water levels and fishable conditions. Looking forward to more angler reports and success but over all the fishing pressure has been real light. Not surprising since it was a real gloomy overcast wet kind of day that you would expect good fish movement. Beads in natural colors really shine on early season trout with all the salmon eggs around. Back on the retreat thru today after a cold night. This is kind of a reset (at least when it warms back up) and with a return to some more inviting flows and stained water there should be new migrations of spring fish. The highlight though, was landing everyones. Theres no significant icing anywhere that we are aware of. Look for plenty of brown trout action ahead, most guys targeting browns look toward end of Oct, thru Nov and begin part of Dec.You gotta get thru at least some Kings before that brown trout action heats up then followed by steelhead! We cannot speak for the power company or interpret their site rules. 3.5. Real light fishing pressure except for a few guys fishing nearer the dam and they have been getting hook ups. Even during the current COVID-19 public health crisis, getting outdoors and connecting with nature while angling in New Yorks waters is a great way to help maintain mental and physical health. Even lucky, old and not pretty casters like the Licorice Man can get in on the early hard striking and fighting fresh King action at the Oak Orchard rivermouth! To the east, like at Sandy Creek, the higher Canal bolstered flows have made for better migration conditions with pods of salmon bolting from the estuary holding water and spreading upstream, along with a few browns mixed in.. We found meat was the best bait. Downstream slow water is getting pretty froggy thanks to rising Lake Ontario levels and the lowering upstream flows. Stay tuned though for any future high water that could really perk things up. Any emergency Canal drainage flows are now tempered and so that leaves tribs like the Oak and Sandy mostly to regular run of the river flows. And maybe into the early spring! All the waterways are wide open to fish with no icing to worry about for now. Im hearing of a few hook ups each outing for most guys, and those anglers report putting in the time and working for the hook ups by covering different water with swings or dead drifts. You wouldnt mind see flows a little higher in the Oak for best steelhead chances, but the risk there is to be careful what you wish for. Flows in the other smaller waterways are about medium and slightly stained, likely offering up a nice fishable window for now. At least flows are stronger which helps combat icing back up. We are in the high season for visiting fisherman so go to. Anglers are toughing it out for a few bites daily on browns or steelhead. Fishing pressure is over-the-all pretty light and manageable. Canal water flow managers are likely throttling back any additional Canal releases into the tribs thanks to all the precipitation. The river flow has increased with the rain this week. Then theres the building King numbers at the dam, fish numbers probably outpacing the creeling pressure to this point. Flows in the Oak are about medium and slightly stained with about 2 ft of visibility. Id look for it going high and stained about thru this weekend. Action reported pretty good around the Archers Club yesterday and then slower today. We need 2 cookies to store this setting. Guys have so far caught a few browns and a few steelhead and a few cohos and a few Atlantics. Then from there it was a slow but steady pick. Another shot of precipitation from a couple of days ago forecast ahead thru the mid week looks seasonable cool and mostly clear with a slight warm up toward the end of week. The LOC started Friday and runs until September 6thLabor Day. The lake conditions could not have been better, we just needed to get them on some fish. Bro-Weekend was a success for the Meyer family from Eastern PA and NJ (pictured below)! No real change yet seen in Oak upstream headwater flows but shortly Canal water will run out and Id be looking for some kind of continued lowering flows by end of week or weekend that is without any new significant precipitation for runoff. Strong upstream headwater supplies are likely driving the water feed below the dam. Temps are on the mild side, dropping down some at night and thru today and over the next part of the week we are getting some melt off which should be good for maintenance. The area smaller trib flows bumped up slightly while flows in the Oak have kept humming along at about slightly high and slightly stained. Same set up as the night before. Especially with the way the weather is proceeding. Fish have been taking mostly spoons with a few meat and flasher/fly mixed in. High and stained flows gives up some fresh Oak Orchard chrome for the Licorice Man. Anglers who find the best fishing often anticipate when the right conditions will come together. Cool nights and cooperative winds should make for better battles with more staging Kings and trout chances as well. Our best set up was a 10 white double crush glow Spindoctor with A-TOM-MIK glow warship twinkie head. There is some icing especially in downstream slow water spots and some bank ice. (There will be no fees for the 2021 canal boating season.) Reports of lowering flows in Johnson Creek and we are unsure why? There could be fresh steelhead, fresh silver browns or drop back fish. Look for some late fish to come thru but likely not in any great concentrations. Look for a bit of a temp shock there and the fishing action back on the rebound as things warm back up. Flows in the Oak are restored thru the turbine channel. Past weekend action a little slower perhaps a result of increased fishing pressure. Everything is wide open to fish and its going to take a cold snap to get things iced back up again. This latest rise in flows and continued cool down should kick off better brown trout migrations in the Oak setting up good drifting chances into November and maybe into December with reasonable weather hanging in.
