My feeling at that point is very simple: What am I going back to now? David Frieberg, our bass and key- board player, had been going to Nautilus for about a year, so I decided to go along and try it and see what it was like. I was interested in anything I could get ideas from. I was kind of surprised. A lot of times, I drive the band, not by playing every 16th note, but by playing the second, third and fourth 16th note, leaving the downbeat and the up- beat open. And I said, Dont call it Journey. I just told somebody that, a couple weeks ago, a writer that Im working withmy own voice is sometimes difficult to hear. It. And he was there for a brief time, until Herbie heard my tape and convinced them that they were gonna have to move from him to me. And fall back into my life. The Waka/Jawakaalbum was an interesting session, just because it was completely off the wall ad-lib. We were just playing dance music, but because I had been practicing for a few years, I was able to play along with all of the people who were my heroes. And she gave him the message, he called me from there, and I said Maybe we should talk about getting back together, Id like to see what you think, lets have coffee when you get back. So we had coffee, talked about it, and he said, Well, we should get together with Neal and talk about it, and me and Neal and Jon had coffee, and that was kind of the beginning. It's an hour-long workout, in which you push yourself to the maximum. Well. The music was a mix of instrumental orientated rock-fusion and progressive tunes with vocals. AD: It's the difference that's required by the song. If you want to make a song a hit record, it's got to be clean, crisp, and to the point. They were of the generation we were speaking of earlier, that newer generation of fans. Sykes, is one of the co-writers of nine track's from the albums, but was later on, along with drummer Aynsley Dunbar and bassist Neil Murray, kicked out of the band. Liverpool drummer Aynsley Dunbar had been working with Merseybeat hitmakers The Mojos (their "Everything's Alright" reached no.9 in 1964) in their later incarnation as "Stu James & The Mojos," and recorded two singles with them before the group disbanded in 1966. . Next I got a small tom-tom, then two cymbals, then a large tom, and sort of built up the kit bit by bit. He went to bat for me in a huge way. Sure enough, I was playing a gig and they just popped in and said, we're looking for a drummer and we'd like to know if you would like to move to Lon- don and join us." I like to do it when I'm not on the road. He was a member of John Mayall's Bluesbreakers, along with Peter Green & John McVie who would form Fleetwood Mac. So it felt freeing at some level to be a free agent, in 98, cause the industry was really changing, and the Internet was becoming a big thing, and I thought, Gee, the futures kinda wide open. And then [laughs] then I just got this unbelievable freaky drive, which shows the neurosis of the singer-songwriter.
